Temporal concepts and vocabularies, including periods and events, are a natural counterpart to geographic places.
Although the temporal component is sometimes ignored in place gazetteers, it is desirable to find ways in which place and period gazetteers can work together and inform each other. This may lead to a unified data model for place gazetteers and period gazetteers based on spatio-temporal entities, such as the extent of a given city at a particular moment. This temporal component fits closely with the place-based goals of Pelagios, but it has not yet been fully integrated into the Pelagios environment.
Therefore this working group aims to:
* Create a directory of existing LOD period gazetteers, standards, and data models, so that Commons members know where to find these resources;
* Develop simple rules for working with these period gazetteers and developing new ones, in terms of both adding data and using identifiers in local datasets
* Promote the connection of LOD gazetteers for periods to each other and to LOD gazetteers for places.

I have created the submission for a workshop in Wikimania, and I invite you to add your thoughts to it! I have marked Rebecca as the second author of the submission, which is meant to show that both groups will be involved. I hope it’s ok!
Just a quick note from me: we don’t oblige grant applicants to apply through WGs, only if it makes sense to do so. You can also pitch your application so that it demonstrates **value to the community more broadly** (see http://commons.pelagios.org/2017/03/resource-development-grants-2017-cfp/).
in any case, it looks like it’s been…[Read more]
Hi Adam, Karl
Thank you for the thoughtful replies. We would like to propose a compact task for the Pelagios grant. We have already written the proposal but have not yet had the chance to discuss the scope. I brief, it includes
I agree with Adam, that what you have in mind is closer to the Linked Pasts WG interests than the Time WG, but it may concern the core interconnection data format most. Have you arranged for the Wikimania workshop yet? You didn’t mention here that the Wikiproject Historical Place project is principally concerned with representing…[Read more]

Dear Adam, Jan, all,
Thanks a lot for the feedback. It was very helpful.
I prepared the grant proposal at:
If you have the time to comment, it would be appreciated.
All the best,
Dear Time Working Group Members
Due to overwhelming community demand (you are a persistent bunch) we’ve decided to extend the deadline for the Resource Development Grant proposals to April 23, 2017.
The same application guidelines apply – you can see them here.
We look forward to seeing all the proposals.

Thanks for posting, and sorry for the slow reply! Your post came while I was out of town for a conference, and I’m only now catching up.
My sense is that this project falls more under the heading of the Linked Pasts WG than ours, since it’s focused primarily on place, and since its explicit goal is to expand the LD network. May I…[Read more]

As the co-coordinator of the Time WG and the co-PI of PeriodO, I can say that a temporal parsing algorithm to carry out NER on texts that use period terms would be of great interest to the group. I suspect that it would be much more useful for the analysis of contemporary texts or database records that refer to the past, rather than…[Read more]

Have you looked at this?

I’m trying to gather interest on automatic tools to link names (places or periods) to gazetteers, to possibly apply to the 2017 Resource Development Grants.
I posted previously about it in the Linked Pasts…[Read more]
The Linked Pasts and Time Working Groups are soliciting feedback from all Commons members, and others with an interest, on the topic of events and event modeling. We have published a Pelagios Commons blog post explaining our motivation and posing some specific questions. Please have a look and weigh in with comments.
Hi Time WG!
Me and Wikimedia Sweden are proposing to work with the Pelagios Commons Community on historical places in Wikidata. The basic idea of the proposal is to facilitate discussion about modelling historical places in Wikidata, in other words, applying data that the Pelagios have collected into Wikidata.
This will allow the data, for w…[Read more]
